With the ski season very near, it is very hard to choose where to go skiing. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to skiing in Europe as there are so many great resorts all around. Here, at The Garda Travel Club, one of the major destinations for skiing is Austria.
Austria is extremely popular. It has many different resorts where you will be sure to find something for everyone. Austria has very good snow quality and coverage as well as having the longest ski period in the world. Most of the resorts are easily accessible from the airports via public transport. Austria is also world famous for its lively ‘Après Ski’. There are many resorts in Austria but we definitely have our favorites in the Garda Travel Club.
Mayrhofen – Made up of two ski areas Penken and Ahorn, Mayrhofen is one of Irelands favourite ski resorts. It is great for families, beginners, groups – basically everyone at all levels. It is known for hosting the popular music festival snowbombing.com and also the Altitude Comedy Festival. It is great for partying due to the popular music festival but also for its great Après ski and many bars. At Christmas time it becomes a wonderful winter wonderland and has extraordinary Christmas markets.
Zel-am-see – Great for first timers and with many children’s ski areas dotted around it is great for families. Zel-am-see has various accommodation options from luxury to family to budget friendly stays. It is known as one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the world. If you would like to take a break from skiing why not take a trip to the gorgeous picturesque town and try out the great restaurants and shopping it has to offer. If you would like to try something a bit different you could opt for a horse drawn sleigh ride or take a trip to an ice rink to watch the local hockey team.
St Anton – With a 305km ski area, St Anton is great for expert skiers. If a challenge is what you are looking for, it has many slopes that would put any expert to the test. St Anton has a car free center with many activities throughout the day and night and has a busy Après ski scene with many well known bars but make sure you get there early as it gets very busy.
Saalbach – Situated in the Glemm Valley, in one of the Austria’s biggest linked area, the 270km SkiCircus has expanded and now has a gondola link to Fieberbrunn. It is great for everyone with all levels of ski. The full-on Après ski scene is well known in Saalbach with bustling bars and great atmosphere. Why not take a ride on the Alpine coaster or try snow tubing (sliding down a hill on a big rubber ring) – if you dare!
