There’s nothing quite like stepping off the plane into warm sunshine and blue skies. Whether you’re relaxing on the beaches of Turkey, exploring the streets of Malta or enjoying a luxury escape in Mexico, the sun is one of the best parts of any holiday.
While we all love making the most of the sunshine, it’s important to protect yourself and your family so you can enjoy every moment of your trip.
Here are a few simple tips to help you stay safe in the sun this summer.
Pack the Essentials
Before you travel, make sure you’ve packed more than just your passport and swimwear. A few holiday essentials can make all the difference when spending long days outdoors.
Don’t forget to bring:
- High SPF sunscreen
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- A wide-brimmed hat or cap
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
- Lightweight clothing to cover your shoulders during the hottest part of the day
- After-sun lotion or aloe vera gel
Being prepared means you can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying your holiday.
Looking After Little Travellers
Family holidays are all about making memories, but children need a little extra care in the sun.
Children’s skin is much more sensitive than adults’, so they can burn much more quickly. Try to keep little ones in the shade during the hottest hours of the day, usually between 11am and 3pm, and remember to reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming.
Keeping everyone well hydrated is just as important, particularly during sightseeing or days spent by the pool.
Suncream Myths You Shouldn’t Believe
Even experienced travellers can get caught out by some common misconceptions.
“I only need to apply sunscreen once.”
Not quite. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, and always after swimming or heavy perspiration.
“It’s cloudy, so I won’t burn.”
UV rays can pass through cloud cover, meaning your skin is still at risk even on overcast days.
“A high SPF protects me all day.”
A higher SPF offers greater protection, but it doesn’t last all day. Regular reapplication and taking breaks in the shade are still essential.
If You Do Get Sunburnt
Even with the best preparation, sunburn can sometimes happen.
If your skin becomes burnt, move out of direct sunlight, cool the affected area with a cool shower or damp towel, drink plenty of water and apply an after-sun lotion or aloe vera gel to soothe the skin.
If the burn is severe, causes blistering or leaves you feeling unwell, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
