Croatia

Hugely popular with Irish holiday makers before war abruptly blew it off the tourist map, Croatia is now firmly back on the list of must-go destinations for Garda Holiday and Travel Club members.

Hugging the Adriatic, opposite Italy, there are over a hundreds of islands along the coast. Croatia is the perfect setting for a beach holiday with a difference, yet steeped in centuries of history, which towns like Dubrovnik bear witness to.

What you can expect
To fully appreciate the staggering beauty of the coastline, island-hopping is a must.  Picturesque harbours are dotted along its length and red roofed villages appear to be an extension of the cliff sides themselves.

Inexpensive and delicious
Eating out is inexpensive and delicious.  There is a huge variety of local and international dishes to enjoy on a Croatia holiday.  This area of the Adriatic is fish lovers paradise with over 370 species cooked in almost as many ways. ”Brodet”, a dish made of several kinds of fish, deserves special attention. Another excellent choice is the ”Prsut”, the dark smoked Dalmatian ham.   Wash it all down with the very palatable wine of Dalmatia.

Almost every large resort on the Adriatic coast organises its own summer festivals, with open-air concerts, fisherman’s nights and folk dancing shows.  There are plenty of bars and discos which stay open late.

Garda Travel Club ‘lightbulb’ – Croatia does not use the Euro, so make sure you order your foreign exchange in advance!
